Getting an angioplasty and receiving a CYPHER® Stent is a minimally-invasive and effective treatment for symptoms caused by blocked coronary arteries.
The procedure has three parts:
- A balloon catheter is inserted into the artery and positioned at the site of the blockage.
- Once it is in place, your doctor will expand the balloon to push the plaque back. This widens the coronary artery to improve blood flow.
- After a wider channel has been created, your doctor will then insert the stent into your artery, and position it at the site of the blockage. The stent expands when the balloon inflates and becomes a permanent part of the artery, helping to hold it open and keep blood and oxygen flowing to your heart.
After the procedure, a drug is released from the CYPHER® Stent over 90 days to prevent re-blockage in the treated area. Sirolimus, the unique medicine in the CYPHER® Stent helps limit the overgrowth of normal cells while the artery heals and significantly reduces the chance that you may need another procedure. |
